About me

Hi,

I am Dieter Baumgartner and I am fascinated by microbial life. I combine my love of science with my mechanical engineering skills to build custom experimental setups to answer new and old questions.

I have a doctorate from ETH Zürich where I studied bacterial physiology from a single cell biomass perspective in the Stockerlab. Our new approach gives unprecedented access to single cell bacterial biomass using digital holography.

I am currently a SNF mobility Postdoctoral researcher at Caltech developing a new model system to study marine snow and unravel the biophysical mechanisms that underpin the formation of marine snow.
